Local detail

How we work in Alexandria homes

Older and newer homes alike get plaster and drywall patches that blend in, TV mounting, art hanging, curtain hardware and smart-home setup, and we bring the tools and anchors for the wall in front of us.

Whatever the home, we check the wall first, then choose the anchors, bits and patch method to suit, and we match paint so repairs disappear.

Text your address and a photo of the job and we confirm an arrival window. In older buildings we pick anchors and patch methods to suit plaster or settled walls, and any electrical work goes through our licensed partners.

A little local history, and why it matters for repairs

Old Town Alexandria was laid out in 1749 and is a historic district. The Rosemont neighborhood was developed between 1908 and 1914 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Houses from the early 1900s often have plaster walls. That is why we check the wall before we patch, hang or drill.

How we care for older homes in Alexandria

Inside

  • We check what your walls are made of first. Plaster is not drywall, so the patch, fasteners and paint can be different.
  • We mount into framing or solid masonry where we can, drill gently, and cover floors and trim.
  • Paint and primer need to suit the wall and any old paint, so we check before we coat.
  • Built before 1978? We flag possible lead paint and recommend proper testing and professional handling before painted surfaces are disturbed.

Outside

  • Cleaning: we use gentle, tested methods and start with the mildest approach, trying it in a hidden spot first. We avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washing on older masonry and finishes.
  • Mortar: we do not use grinders or hard patching cement on old mortar joints. Repointing is mason's work, and we will say so.
  • Water: keep sprinklers and hoses from soaking foundations and walls. Extra moisture is hard on old masonry.

History sources: Old Town Alexandria, Rosemont Historic District. Care guidance: NPS Preservation Brief 21 (plaster), Brief 1 (cleaning masonry), Brief 2 (repointing), Brief 39 (moisture), EPA on lead paint, Historic England on ivy. More in our plaster guide.

Know your walls

Plaster or drywall? A quick check before you drill

Many older homes have plaster walls, not drywall. They need different patches, fasteners and paint. Here is a simple way to tell.

How to tell plaster from drywall

  • Age. Plaster was the main interior wall finish until the 1940s. Newer homes are more likely to have drywall.
  • Thickness. Plaster is built up in coats and is usually thicker than drywall. Over wood strips (called lath) it is about ¾ to ⅞ inch. This is a clue, not proof.
  • The back of the wall. In an unfinished attic, basement or closet you may see lumps of plaster, called keys, pushed between the lath strips. Drywall is a board of gypsum between two sheets of paper and has no keys.
  • Cracks. Fine hairline cracks in random directions are common in old plaster. They often open and close with the seasons.
  • Not sure? Text us a photo. We check before we drill or patch.

What to ask a handyman

  • Do you identify the wall material before you drill or patch?
  • What patch and anchor method do you use on plaster?
  • How do you handle paint in homes built before 1978?
  • How do you protect floors, trim and finishes?
